memorial day weekend

Jesse, Yuki, and I went to Runyon Canyon Park in Hollywood for the first time over Memorial Day weekend. Runyon Canyon is a 160-acre park at the edge of the Santa Monica Mountains, with views of the city and the Hollywood Hills. There is an off-leash policy for dogs, which made is especially appealing. We'd never taken Yuki "hiking" off-leash, so we weren't entirely sure how he would do, but he was great. It was a warm, sunny day in Hollywood, so it was cute to watch him look for shaded spots along the approximately 3-mile route (we gave him plenty of water along the way, so don't go thinking we are mean dog-owners). He seemed to have a great time. And Jesse and I enjoyed going somewhere new.
The next day, we drove up to Hesperia in the high desert to see my friend Emilee and her family. Emilee and I were roommates during our semester abroad in Oxford, and I never expected that we would ever get to live so close to each other. Jesse and I had a great time, and we hope we get to see them a lot now that we live here. There were some stunning views on the drive home - I love that the California landscape is so varied. In one weekend, we enjoyed the coast, the city, the mountains, and the desert.
